The Difference of Prototype, Pilot, and Production Molds

  Prototype Mold

Prototype mold usually just focus producing a product, but the method of gating and cooling and ejection as well as materials may be very different to the production mold design. The aim is to create a functional part in the final material, providing sales and marketing teams with tangible samples to present to management or customers. Typically, prototype molds are made from aluminum or soft pre-hardened steel to ensure fast turnaround and minimize costs for low-volume production.

In recent years, alternative rapid prototyping methods like 3D printing, CNC machining, or vacuum casting have become popular, especially when there’s no need for testing the product’s strength or no request to use the final material. These methods offer speed and flexibility in creating prototypes without the need for a traditional mold.

  Pilot Mold

A pilot mold is designed to closely mirror the production mold, featuring the same gating, parting line, insert design, materials, and cooling systems. Ideally, the production mold is conceptually designed first, and then an insert stack is extracted and placed into a pilot mold frame.This approach maximizes the learning potential from the pilot mold, ensuring that any issues can be identified and corrected before full-scale production begins. By aligning the pilot mold closely with the production mold, manufacturers can significantly reduce overall project lead time and ensure a smoother transition to mass production.

  Production Mold

A production mold is the final and most refined version of the mold used for high-volume manufacturing, and it is also called series mold. Unlike prototype or pilot molds, production molds are engineered for long-term durability and consistent performance. They are typically constructed from high-quality, hardened steel or other robust materials to withstand the rigors of mass production, ensuring that each part produced meets exacting quality standards.
