What is CNC Grinding?

CNC grinding is a precision machining process that uses a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) system to automate the grinding process. In CNC grinding, an abrasive wheel is used as the cutting tool to remove small amounts of material from a workpiece to achieve a desired shape, dimension, or surface finish.

Our Two Types of CNC Grinding

CNC Surface Grinding

Purpose: Used for creating a smooth, flat surface on a workpiece.

Process: The grinding wheel moves horizontally over the surface of the workpiece. The workpiece itself may be moved in a reciprocal motion or kept stationary.

Applications: Commonly used in the production of precision flat components such as machine bases, precision tooling, and mold components.

CNC Cylindrical Grinding

Purpose: Designed for grinding cylindrical or rod-shaped workpieces.

Process: The workpiece rotates around its axis while the grinding wheel moves longitudinally across it. This type can be further divided into:

External Cylindrical Grinding: Where the grinding takes place on the external surface of the workpiece.

Internal Cylindrical Grinding: Where the grinding takes place on the internal surface of the workpiece.

Applications: Used for shafts, rods, and cylindrical components in automotive and aerospace industries.

Application of CNC Grinding

Grinding machines feature a wide range of applications, and their applications can be seen in many ways. They include the production of flute grinding, thread and cylinder grinding, grinding milling cutters, surface grinding, contour grinding, broach and hob grinding, reamers, and step-drill grinding, and many more. All these applications are spread across a wide variety of industries, including:

  •   Automotive industry
  •   Aerospace industry
  •   Die or Mold industry
  •   Machine tools manufacturers
  •   Medical industry
  •   Tooling industry
  •   And more
